INTRODUCTION
Periyar University, Salem (Tamil Nadu) was established in the year 1997 in memory of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, the rationalist and greatest social reformer in the 20th century, by an Act of Tamil Nadu State Legislature (Act No.45-97) in exercise of the powers conferred by section 33 read with sub section (4) of section 57 of section 57 of the Periyar University Act 1997 and notified in the State Govt.

The objectives, the PRIDE has set for itself are
Gazette vide No.414 dated 11.08.1997 which is already included in the list of Universities maintained by the UGC under section 2(f) of the UGC Act,1956 vide notification No.F9-1/98 (CPP-I) dt 16.12.1998 and declared eligible to receive central assistance in terms of Rules framed underSection 12(B) of UGC Act 1956 on 17.05.2005.
The Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE) was established in 2001-2002 to serve the student population and offers inter alia, Undergraduate and Diploma and M.Phil courses.
The Open University is established in the year 2005 to serve the student population and offers inter alia Undergraduate courses and Diploma in journalism and Mass Communication.
Two types of application forms and prospectus are available i.e., one for MBA / MCA / M.Sc. IT,and second for other courses and different costs.
The students can make use of this opportunity to enrich their knowledge and skill to serve better to the society and to improve the standard of living.
